New Covenant Forum : Encouraging Conversation About Jesus the Jewish Messiah

Help my non-believing Jewish family

The most difficult aspect of Jewish faith in Jesus is often the response of our non-believing Jewish family, and our continual concern for their spiritual welfare.

What You Can Do

Yeshua, when in his home town of Nazareth made the quip, “a prophet is not without honour except in his hometown and in his own household. (Matthew  13:57)”   We may not be prophets, but the truth is that often our Jewish family members will often be more likely to listen to others than they will to us, especially in matters of the Gospel.

That does not mean, however, that you cannot have a Gospel impact on your Jewish family (and friends).  Here are a few things you can do to help share the Gospel with those you care about:

  • Pray for your Jewish family members.  Even if you must pray for years, God hears those prayers and will answer in His time and according to His good and perfect will.  God calls on us to pray and, “the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. (James 5:16)”
  • Be patient.  Although we all want to shout for joy about our new found faith in Messiah, such proclamations can sometime put up walls that are very hard to break down.  Sometimes sharing the Gospel with family takes time.  No one knows your family better than you do.  Use your judgement, ask God for discernment, and proceed accordingly.
  • Live a life devoted to Christ.  Sometimes we don’t have to express the Gospel in words.  Often, as we live out our faith in Messiah, the change that occurs in our lives speaks volumes to those who know us well.  A true faith leaves indelible marks effecting how we behave and live, which can’t help to be noticed.
  • Look for opportunities.  Especially if your family remains in contact with you, patience may reward you with chances to share your faith, without being challenging.  You might even be surprised with unsolicited questions.  Peter said, “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. (1 Peter 3:15, italics ours)”
  • Learn more about the Jewish roots of the Christian faith.  Remember that faith in Yeshua is the Biblical Jewish faith.  The better you understand how that is, the better you can explain it to others, including your Jewish family and friends.
  • If your family has cut off contact with you, don’t despair.  Continue to pray for reconciliation.  Although there are no guarantees, we know of many Jewish believers, even from the Orthodox community who were cut off from their family but were later reconnected.  Some of them even had family members who came to the Lord.  (For one such story, go to Journey to a Better Life, the story of Tovah Schulman)  You can also pray that the Lord will bring others into their lives who will share the Gospel message with them.
  • Always remember that God is in charge.  He knows the longing of your and the needs of your family.  In the end, we must trust in Him and in His decision concerning our loved ones.
